Hello and thank you for checking this out. I created this zine as a way to share stories and places from my life, and as a creative outlet. I spent all of my 20s and most of my 30s helping others create things: shirts, posters, zines, and records, but this zine is a project of my own.
I have always remembered my life through places. By the time Rae and I hit the road in 2020, my life was already divided into chapters by the places I had lived or worked. Since I left my childhood home at 19, I changed either my home or workplace nearly every year. So when I think about my past I tend to begin with where I was living and the places I would spend my time. From there, I am able to unlock my memories and fill in the details. I realized that each place had become a container for that chapter of my life. With distance from parts of my past, I am able to see things that I couldn’t at the time. I am discovering how each place led to the next. This is why I started this zine.
Welcome to Personal Cartography, a seasonal exploration of how places shape a life. My life, to be specific, but also I am hoping it will get you thinking about your life too.
I made this a print publication because I want something that you can hold on to, that you can throw on your coffee table, or even pass it on to someone you think might find it interesting. This is my attempt to make a map of the places that shaped me and how they’re all connected.
